One of the questions we get asked most is: what materials can you use on a laser cutter? And our answer is usually: how much time do you have?
Because laser cutters are suitable for use with a huge range of materials, including wood, plastic, metals, leather, paper, rubber, fabrics, glass… the list goes on and on. Each material brings with it certain advantages depending on the requirements of the project and the environment where cutting is taking place. For example, of all the laser cutting materials available, one we often recommend for use in schools and other educational institutions is acrylic. The are a number of very good reasons for this, as you’re about to discover:
Low Cost
There’s no getting around the fact that for most schools, budgets are a big issue. With education budgets limited, schools can’t afford to waste a penny and materials and equipment need to reflect this. This is why acrylic is a good low cost alternative, especially when compared to glass. Not only does it achieve the same levels of optical clarity but it also allows students to make mistakes and experiment with an inexpensive material. It is an ideal material for first-timers or inexperienced users, as it’s versatile and easy to handle. And, as pointed out above, the low cost also allows scope for mistakes to be made.
